Wisdom Teeth Extraction at 82 Dental
Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the final set of teeth to emerge, typically between the ages of 17 and 21, situated at the furthest point in the mouth, both upper and lower.
While some individuals may never experience issues with their wisdom teeth, for others, extraction becomes essential. Insufficient space in the mouth for these teeth to develop appropriately may result in pressure, leading to pain and discomfort. Wisdom teeth emergence may also potentially result in infection or damage to the adjacent teeth.
Why Remove Wisdom Teeth?
The extraction of wisdom teeth could be either preventive or corrective. Upon consultation with your dentist, it might be decided that teeth removal can help circumvent future complications. Discomfort or pain might necessitate the decision to extract one, or all, of the wisdom teeth to alleviate the issue.
Common complications with wisdom teeth include:
Impacted wisdom teeth: This happens when the jaw isn’t large enough for the teeth to break through.
Partial eruption/infection: If the wisdom teeth partially emerge through the gums, a flap of gum tissue may grow over them, trapping food and bacteria, potentially leading to infection, pain, and swelling.
Angular growth: If the wisdom teeth erupt at an inappropriate angle (forward, backward or to the sides), it could lead to complications such as potential damage to adjacent teeth/bone or the formation of a cyst.
Besides resolving problems like those mentioned above, and relieving discomfort, wisdom teeth extraction often means less “crowding” in the mouth. This can help prevent orthodontic issues, encourage better oral hygiene (as the teeth are simpler to clean), and reduce the risk of damaging the neighboring teeth.

The Process of Removing Wisdom Teeth
Prior to deciding on wisdom teeth extraction, you will have a detailed discussion with one of our family dentists to answer any questions you may have. The extraction process itself is a common procedure performed in-clinic, with recovery times varying depending on factors like age, overall health, and so forth.
The dentist will first use a preferred form of sedation to relax and keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. During the extraction, the dentist will make an incision in the gum tissue over the tooth and proceed to extract the tooth, either in fragments or as a whole. Any bone covering the tooth will also be removed. You will be required to arrange for a safe ride home with a friend or family member from the clinic after your procedure to avoid any risk of driving while drowsy from the sedation.
Post-procedure, your dentist will advise you to refrain from strenuous physical activities and to avoid lying flat, as it may induce bleeding. For a few days, you’ll be encouraged to consume soft foods like soup and to avoid smoking or using a straw. Any sucking action can dislodge the clot protecting your healing gum sockets. In certain instances, an antibiotic might be prescribed to prevent infection. If that’s the case, ensure that you complete the entire course as prescribed.
